Diogo Ribeiro, 19, made his Olympic debut on Tuesday in the 100-meter freestyle, finishing seventh in his heat with a time of 48.88 seconds and failing to qualify for the semifinals, where his record was not among the 16 fastest. Diogo Ribeiro finished 28th in the heats out of 79 athletes.

World champion in the 50m and 100m butterfly, Diogo Ribeiro, will enter the Olympic pool again on Tuesday, but in the 50m freestyle. The 100m butterfly race is on Friday.

“I'm very calm about what's missing.”

At the end of his participation, Diogo Ribeiro analyzed his performance: “I almost took the lead and it was a good race at the beginning, but I ended up paying the price for that good start. I swam up instead of going forward. It cost me the last 15 meters.

“I already knew, from the last races I had done, that the last 15/25 metres would always be the most painful. I thought it would be calmer, but I failed in that detail of pulling up instead of going forward,” the Portuguese added.

Diogo Ribeiro admitted that competing in the Olympic Games has a different nature to the World Cup, but he stressed that the elimination did not affect him.

“These are the Olympic Games. The pressure and the feelings are different. In fact, it was calmer than at the World Cup. But it doesn't always go well. I don't have to worry and I'm very calm about what I'm missing.

Regarding what he still has to do, Diogo Ribeiro showed optimism and revealed how he views what he still has to swim: “The big challenge is the 100m butterfly of course. The 50m freestyle is a test to understand my speed.
