Deer Supermoon 2023: Why it’s named and when you’ll see it

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with a satellite’s perihelion (its closest approach to Earth), as explained by NASA. This is why, for those who like to watch the moon, the night of Monday, July 3, would be the perfect time, as this is when the deer supermoon is called for.

according to Farmers’ almanaca collection of knowledge on topics such as astronomy and gardening published since 1818 in the United States, the maximum illumination time of this supermoon will occur at 8:39 am in Brazil (Brasilia time).

“The moon will appear full for three days at this time, from Saturday night to Tuesday evening,” the US space agency said.

According to NASA, the Deer Supermoon is so named because the astronomical phenomenon coincides with the birth of new antlers on male deer, which begin to appear on the animals’ foreheads in early summer in the Northern Hemisphere.

The US agency also stated that the event is also known as the Thunder Moon because of the frequent storms typical of early summer in the northern hemisphere.

NASA concluded that in Europe, the Super Deer Moon is also known as the High Moon because it coincides with the hay-producing season. Meanwhile, for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains (followers of the Indian religion Jain Dharma), this is Guru Phool Moon (Guru Purnima), celebrated as a time of clearing the mind and honoring a guru or spiritual guru.
