Musician Olivier Dervier (Streets of Rage 4, Vampyr, A Plague Tale: Innocence), responsible for the soundtrack for Dying Light 2 Stay Human, told how he created a unique instrument, using only scrap metal, to help compose the game’s music.
Created from an old bicycle wheel, steel cable, various metal wires and other discarded items from the city, the Electric Psalm Book was made to evoke the ingenuity of the Philidor survivors, as if taken straight from the game world.
Designed by musician and instrumentalist Nicholas Brass, who specializes in ‘do-it-yourself’ equipment, the Psalter’s strings, which can be plucked or bent, are compatible with certain characters in the game. The top of the psaltery makes a soft sound when turning, and can be heard in the game as the player makes decisions that will affect the story, characters or the world at large.
To bring to life the ambitious soundtrack of Dying Light 2 Stay Human, Olivier Derivière and Techland collaborated with one of the world’s best orchestras, the London Contemporary Orchestra. Along with Abbey Road Studios, Olivier and the orchestra recorded the full score, creating an audio experience they promise players will never forget.
It supports the narrative by generating nostalgia at certain times, encourages bravery in battles by adding adrenaline with appropriate melodies, and activates the player to press harder while playing parkour in the all over the city.” stay human “This collaboration between us made the sound evolve in line with our artistic vision of what we would see on screen and seamlessly integrate. It was really an ambitious project, but we had a lot of fun, and seeing the end result was definitely worth it.”
“It has been an amazing journey working with Techland creating a unique game soundscape and pushing the boundaries in open world music design,” said Olivier.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human will be released on February 4, 2022 for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam and Epic Games Store).
