Perez is said to have been stabbed in the neck in the Colombian Carmen de Viboral district of Antioquia.

In 2011, he won the gold medal during the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, while already in 1994 he managed to decorate himself with the title of world champion in track cycling.
Perez has also participated three times in the Giro d'Italia. He retired as a professional cyclist in 2016.
