Cancels the press conference: – Avoids difficult questions

Responding to Russian "panic letters".

Military spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday afternoon that Russian President Vladimir Putin He won’t hold a big press conference this year, As he did in previous years.

Instead, Putin will find a suitable opportunity to speak to the press, but it is not yet decided what day this will happen. In addition, it is reported that the Kremlin will not hold a New Year’s reception this year.

– Nobody likes to be asked critical questions that are difficult to answer, says NUPI researcher Jakub Godzimirski on cancellation.

He worked on Russian foreign and security policy at the Norwegian Foreign Policy Institute for more than 20 years and has a lot of knowledge about the current Head of State of Russia.

According to Gudzimirsky, Putin’s pre-New Year’s press conferences had the impression that he had been “played a little bit”, despite the impression that everyone was at liberty to ask him questions.

– This was a way for Putin to communicate with the outside world. He used to answer questions for several hours, but these were questions he was well prepared for, says the NUPI researcher.

British Ministry of Defence It is also believed that the questions have been clarified in advance. However, they consider the press conference likely to be canceled as a result of growing concern about the outbreak of war resistance in Russia.

The British believe it is almost certain that Kremlin officials are very vigilant about the possibility of hijacking events Putin attended by unstructured talk of a “special military operation”.

– No good news

Gudzimirsky thinks Putin’s repeal this year is a signal, saying:

President, people are used to holding this press conference. Why not do it now? What does he not want to answer?

ABC journalist Patrick Revell He writes that this is the first time in at least ten years that Putin did not hold his New Year’s press conference, which many referred to as a press conference marathon. This is because it usually lasts for several hours and attracts a large number of journalists.

Putin has held these long annual press conferences several times, and the fact that they were canceled this year is special because it hasn’t happened since he returned as president in 2012, says Gudzimirsky.

The NUPI researcher believes that Putin realizes that it would be too artificial if questions about the war in Ukraine were not asked at the press conference, and that there was likely a reason to cancel it.

– It’s a subject he probably isn’t very happy to talk about. He doesn’t have good news here, Gudzimirski says.

– clearly under pressure

Last week, a video of the Russian president during an awards ceremony in the Kremlin was released. There he used the opportunity to make a short speech, where he was I vowed that Russia would continue to attack Ukrainian energy system.

At the same time he made his remarks, He toasted like champagne.

– One might get the impression that it was not the first glass, says NUPI researcher Godzirmirski, who believes that Putin is now “obviously under pressure from the situation he is in.”

– The war did not go as he wanted. He spent a lot of money building a defensive structure, and predicted that he would win within ten days. Now ten months have passed and victory is nowhere in sight.

– part of the ritual

The NUPI researcher points out that Putin has built an image of himself as a strong and wise leader who makes good decisions.

– Therefore, he can count on many questions now about the reasonableness of going to war against a neighboring country and a population he described for many years as “brothers,” he says.

However, Godzirmirski believes that Putin will deliver a speech to the people during the last day of the year.

– He usually gives a short New Year’s speech every year on December 31st, where he greets Russians with the New Year – and he will definitely do that this year too. It is part of the ritual – and it will probably be a letter written for him by others, in which he does not risk being subjected to unpleasant questions, as he thinks.
