Brothers: – The decision is here

We recommend abolishing life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, and instead sentencing them to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 25 to 50 years.

This is what Prosecutor George Gascón said in a press conference Thursday evening.

If the recommendation is heeded, the brothers, who have spent the past 34 years in prison, may soon be given the chance to be released.

“They paid for what they did, and we believe they are eligible for parole,” Gascón says.

Eric and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents in Beverly Hills in 1989.

Even if the prosecutor makes a recommendation, it is the judge who will make the final decision in the case.

Great media interest

The case has received significant attention recently due to the popular Netflix series “Monsters” and the documentary series “The Menendez Brothers,” both of which deal with the murders.

In May 2023, the brothers' attorney Cliff Gardner filed a motion challenging the 1989 convictions. The background is that the brothers believe they are imprisoned for the wrong reasons.

In the petition, the lawyer cited a letter written by Eric Menendez to his cousin a year before the murders occurred, as new evidence in the case. In the letter, Menendez is said to have described abuse by his father, Jose Menendez, over several years.

Roy Rosselló, a former member of the boy band Menudo, also alleged that he was abused by the brothers' father. This must have happened when José Menendez was president of RCA Records, as the band had a recording contract.

The Menendez brothers' attorney says these circumstances mean the brothers should have been convicted of negligent homicide rather than premeditated murder. It would also give them a much shorter prison sentence.

Kim Kardashian has become very involved in this matter. Among other things, I published a post on the site NBC News October 4, where she requested the release of the brothers.

“Now that their case is back in the spotlight, and given what was revealed in the letter from 1988, I hope the life sentences for Eric and Lyle Menendez will be overturned,” Kardashian wrote.

We owe it to the children who lost their childhood, who were not heard, helped or saved.
