The former Manchester City French defender has disavowed recent rape allegations but is out of work
On Friday, Benjamin Mendy was cleared of recent rape allegations and soon returned to football. The French defender saw his association with Manchester City end in June of this year, but he left the club (without salary) since he was charged in the course of this process, two years ago. Unemployed, having earned around 116,000 euros a week from the nationals, Mendy is now trying to get back on his feet.
After celebrating the verdict on Friday with a group of friends in a pub, The Sun reported that on Saturday the Frenchman played street football with a group of strangers in Manchester. He appeared in a blue jersey, similar to City’s colours, and simply asked if he could play.
“He showed up and asked if he could join. They couldn’t believe they were going to play football with one of the Premier League stars, the World Cup winner!” The English newspaper.
Mandy was accused of raping several women at private parties in his home. He was acquitted of 7 counts in January, but there were charges (one of rape and one of attempted rape) on which the jury did not reach a consensus. The player was back in court again and last Friday was also acquitted.
Now he hopes to restore his career in Europe, although a move to Saudi Arabia is not ruled out, where he can breathe new life into his bank account, which has been greatly affected as part of the process.
