We said yesterday that AI is really important for Apple, perhaps even more important than a completely new iPhone design, because in a slightly simpler and therefore cheaper way, the North American giant can differentiate between a new model and an old one, and thus start attracting some consumers who usually keep the same device in their pocket for 4 or 5 years or more, towards the new iPhone 16 generation.
In fact, Apple is so confident in its AI-powered features that its sales target is simply unbelievable. 100 million units sold!
Apple wants to sell 100 million iPhone 16. Exaggeration?
So, more specifically, Apple plans to sell between 90 and 100 million units within the iPhone 16 range, after all, about 100 million Apple A18 SoCs (Pro and non-Pro versions) have been ordered.
But… isn't that an exaggeration?
In case you didn’t know, analysts are pointing to weak sales in 2024 and 2025, because visually, the new iPhones won’t be very different compared to previous versions. Moreover, despite the great potential of AI, and the fact that Apple has managed to generate a lot of excitement around its features, they aren’t even available in the iOS 18 beta yet.
The truth is that AI alone won't make Apple sell more smartphones. This is especially true if the price increases in 2024 compared to 2023 models.
Furthermore, Samsung is preparing a new design for the S25 Ultra, and perhaps even more interestingly, Google is confident enough to postpone the launch of its new Google Pixel 9 by two months. Google’s new high-end smartphones will hit the market in August, a month before the announcement of the new iPhone 16.
Not to mention the difficulties Apple is facing in China, where it had to offer discounts of between 300 and 400 euros to be able to seriously ship stock.
Apple has a tough task ahead!
