Apple TV devices will get native VPN app support in tvOS 17, according to Apple press release (by 9to5Mac). It’s one of the many features that didn’t make it to the WWDC 2023 keynote, but it could be a big deal for some people. Assuming the native VPN apps on your Apple streaming device work as they do elsewhere, you may not have to wait until you get home to catch up on streaming shows when traveling with your Apple TV 4K.
Currently, in tvOS 17, to use a VPN with your Apple TV, you’ll need to do something like install a VPN on your router to do this, and not all routers support that. Native VPN support is one of the rare features that Google Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV devices have on Apple TV these days.
We’ve reached out to VPN services like NordVPN and Express VPN to see if they have any plans to develop native apps for Apple TV.
Native VPN support is already available on iPhones, iPads, and Macs, and adding the ability to your Apple TV would probably be great news — not just because it might mean you can stream shows that aren’t available in your country. VPNs on other devices can let you use TikTok for a price banned universityWhile selecting servers outside of your own location, it may allow you to download the beleaguered social media app if broader bans go into effect in a state like Montana, for example.
Other tvOS 17 news announced to see Enhanced Dialogue Embedding, which separates dialogue from background noise and directs it to the center channel and supports Dolby Vision 8.1. It will also provide updates to Apple Fitness+ that will add personalized exercise and meditation plans that you can schedule based on things like your day, preferred duration, and type of exercise. It also adds stacked workouts—essentially a workout playlist option—and Audio Focus, which lets you prioritize the volume of music or sounds from Apple trainers.
