A parent complained that children between the ages of 11 and 12 were exposed to pornography
A Florida public school principal has been forced to resign after a parent complained about 11- and 12-year-olds being exposed to pornography in a Renaissance art class that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture.
According to the Tallahassee Democratic Daily, Tallahassee Classical School principal Hope Carrasquilla resigned this week following an ultimatum from the school board president.
Hope Carrasquilla explained that one parent complained that the material was pornographic and two other parents said they wanted to inform them of the lesson before giving it to their children.
This is one of the most famous sculptures by the Renaissance artist Michelangelo. Executed between 1501 and 1505, the work depicts the biblical hero with such impressive anatomical realism that it is considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance. The statue is located in Florence, Italy, the city that originally commissioned the work. In the 1500s, metallic fig leaves covered the genitals of statues like David, when the Roman Catholic Church deemed nudity obscene.
The art class also included Michelangelo’s “The Creation of Adam” and Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus”.
“It saddens me that my time is here [na escola] Hope Carrasquilla told the newspaper.
David’s nudity is part of a centuries-old debate about whether art transcends the boundaries and rules of censorship.
The Florida riots also prompted social media users to point out similarities to a 1990s episode of The Simpsons in which the characters discussed censoring a “David” statue.
