Alexx Alexxander feared paralysis – it was common for all time

Magician and illusionist Alexx Alexxander (38) started the year 2022 with a fear of being paralyzed. Instead, the year was marked by an upturn after recovery.

– What an adventure it was! Alexx Alexxander told VG it was the biggest and best year of my career.

Not only did he complete – against all odds – his biggest ever tour of Norway; He also received an Honorary Academy Award for Magicians, a Merlin Award as a prankster of the decade in the entertainment capital of Las Vegas, and was allowed to perform at the famous celebrity party organized by Michael Jackson’s son, Prince Jackson, to mark the 40th anniversary. Memory of his father’s legendary album “Thriller”.

But 2022 didn’t start like that at all. On January 5, Alexxander found himself on the operating table with a drooping neck that had been causing severe pain for a few years.

Just before he was taken to the operating room, he read – ironically – a VG report that the cultural council nonetheless knows approbation is culture, so that Alexxander is also entitled to compensation for lost income during the pandemic.

Still a little-thought-of transformation then and there.

– To perform the drooping operation, they had to enter through the neck from the front. Move the esophagus, move the vocal cords, remove the prolapse and insert a prosthetic pad. They had to be very careful when they were doing that. Lots of big risks. I could be paralyzed. I could have had a different sound, were the thoughts the prankster danced.

– The most important thing for me is to get rid of the tremendous pain that I had for about a year before the operation, says Alexxander.

He started feeling his first pains, down his arm, in 2020. Treatment by masseurs, chiropractors, and acupuncturists didn’t help. The pain only got stronger.

– They eventually became so strong that I could not sleep at night. This was as far as I was able to perform, he says.

The painkillers didn’t help either, not even when the doctor gave him the powerful OxyNorm.

– She said the effect lasted six hours on the packaging. And exactly six hours later, I woke up in pain.

Only when Alexx Alexxander was referred to Top Sports Center did he finally get the answer; There was nothing wrong with the arm, but a drop in the neck compressing a nerve that went down the arm.

Surgery became the only way out.

– I remember crying when I talked to the doctor, because I didn’t get an appointment until after Christmas. I was in so much pain and dreaded Christmas with this. When they told me about all the side effects and risks, I was about to cancel the whole process. But this was not relevant. I couldn’t go on with this pain anymore.

One year later, he can laugh a little at the guarantee he got before the operation:

– as the surgeon said. I can’t conjure…

The operation was successful, the pain went away as if by magic (!). In fact, he was told to rest during the summer, but Alexx Alexxander had to work.

– I kept my cool for less than two months. Since the end of February, things have gone from bad to worse, and I didn’t get a day off until the last days before Christmas, he says.

Besides completing his biggest tour, he was also invited to the USA to perform at a big party in Hollywood where he was introduced by Elizabeth Hurley herself.

He also attended dinners with Queen Sonja and Queen Margrethe when the latter were awarded the Nordic Language Prize, at the same time he extended the tour of Norway and had already staged several additional performances.

– Considering how sad I was, how hurt I was, to be able to have a year of ages – it feels amazing. And the New Year continues in the same way. While more artists are getting cancelled, I’m expanding. It’s like now is when it really starts.
