Akka holds an event to raise awareness and prevent childhood cancer

Eduarda Cristina Silva, 21, shared her experience fighting childhood cancer. At age 7, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and went through several doctors until she found a pediatric oncologist. Eduarda faced a bone marrow transplant outside her home, as well as chemotherapy and rigorous treatment. Today, she is a young woman who has overcome cancer and encourages parents to take their children for prevention.

“It is essential that parents take their children to pediatric appointments regularly. It is thanks to this attention that my cancer was detected in a timely manner, which made a huge difference in my recovery journey. Do not underestimate the signs and symptoms, early diagnosis can save lives.

With the aim of raising awareness and information about childhood cancer, on Saturday the 16th of this month, the state government, through the Acre Health Department (Sesacre), promoted an awareness event on Lago do Amor, in reference to “Golden September.” This month is chosen annually to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of childhood cancer, which is represented around the world by the golden ribbon symbol.

Lillian Maya, coordinator of the Network for the Care of People with Chronic Diseases in Sisacre, highlighted the importance of the “Golden September” campaign and the “De Olho nos Olhinhos” project, which aims to prevent retinoblastoma. She emphasized: “Today the movement includes a very important movement, which is Golden September. It emphasizes prevention and early diagnosis of childhood cancer. The High Complexity Oncology Unit (UNACON) is our treatment unit that proves to our community that there is a cure for childhood cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute (INCA), it is expected that in 2023/2025, 7,930 new cases of cancer will occur in Brazil every year among children and adolescents aged 0 to 19 years. It is important to highlight that, as in developed countries, cancer already represents the leading cause of death (8% of total) due to the disease among children and adolescents aged 1 to 19 years in the country.

Pediatric oncologist, Valeria Pereira Paiva, highlighted the importance of Golden September as an event in the fight against childhood cancer, stressing the need to know the signs and symptoms to increase early diagnosis, and thus provide a greater chance of treating children. .

Dr. Valeria Baeva explained: “We must work on the signs, warnings, symptoms and early diagnosis, because timely treatment has a 100% chance of recovery.”

Golden September is an opportunity for the community to unite in raising awareness and prevention of childhood cancer. Early diagnosis and access to appropriate treatments are essential to increase the chances of treatment and provide a better quality of life for children and adolescents facing this battle.
