Afghans with COVID-19 sent for shelter in São Paulo | Science and health

The refugees were staying at Guarulhos International Airport, where they were waiting for vacancies in shelters in São Paulo. The Afghans were in isolation at UPA Cumbica, while they waited to take a place in the shelters.

Afghanistan has been facing resistance from the groups since last year, when the Taliban regained control of the country. Since September 2021, the Brazilian government has been granting visas for the purpose of humanitarian reception of people affected by the situation in Afghanistan.

Most international flights arrive in Brazil through Guarulhos International Airport in São Paulo. Afghans who arrive in Brazil without resources are sent to reception centres. However, there are not enough spaces in these places and Afghans have been flocking to the airport since August.
