The health site spoke with orthopedists Jared T. Lee, Morgan Busko, and Zachary McVicker to understand the major mistakes you’re making. Know it all.

Wearing the wrong shoes
Jared T. Lee explains: “A good walking shoe has high-quality cushioning that allows the foot to flex. A rubber sole is always recommended.”
Look down
“It puts extra pressure on the knees and ankles to maintain balance and leads to a slower gait rather than a smoother gait,” he continues.
Step increase
“A long stride forces the leg to become stiffer and straighter, which reduces the body’s ability to absorb force from the ground,” says Zachary McVicker.
Bad attitude
“If you slouch while walking, it can put extra stress on your feet and joints, affecting your balance and mobility over time,” says Zachary McVicker.
Never walk outside
Just stop walking on the treadmill. “The outer surfaces have less ground reaction force, but they also exercise a few of the stabilizing muscles in the ankle,” Jared T. Lee explains.

“It can contribute to poor posture such as leaning forward, looking down, and slouching,” Jared T. Lee continues.
