A study found that UV nail dryers increase the risk of skin cancer

Gel enamel paint has become a fever because of its finish and practicality. However, using a dryer with UV light, which is common to the procedure, is a health hazard. This is because, according to a recent study published in the journal Nature, the radiation from these devices can cause cell death, which leads to molecular changes associated with skin cancer.

Research revealed that exposing human and mouse skin cells to UVA light for 20 minutes resulted in 20% to 30% of the cells dying. Three consecutive sessions of the same duration resulted in 65% to 70% of the cells dying. However, the cells that survived were damaged and mutated similar to those seen in melanoma.

The head of dermatology at the Hospital of São Vicente de Paulo (HSVP-RJ), Eduardo Falcao, points out that any part of the body irresponsibly exposed to UV rays will show photoaging and spots, and in some cases, cancer.

“Since the equipment in question is not for medical use, it is not possible to know the period or form of safe use. In addition, it is important to say that people around them can be affected, since radiation can be reflected, ”warns the specialist.

Eduardo Falcao points out that light cabins in medicine are used to treat some diseases. However, in these devices it is possible to adjust not only the radiation dose, but also the time for the given treatment.
