A neighborhood friend has arrived to save Hollywood

It was one of the most anticipated films of the year and did not disappoint at the box office. “Spider-Man, Sem Volta a Casa” was Tom Holland’s third best appearance of the year and third best appearance of all time.

He’s one of the most beloved superheroes, and even the pandemic couldn’t quell the excitement of yet another web movie. Considered one of the best Marvel films by critics and praised by fans, “Spider-Man, No Return to Home,” the third with Tom Holland as the hero, premiered in Portugal on Thursday and is already a worldwide hit. It’s the second film to make the best US debut ever, right after Avengers: Endgame and the one that saw the farewells of names like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson from Avengers.

According to “Entertainment Weekly,” the film resulting from the partnership between Sony and Marvel brought in about 108 million euros on Friday alone — on top of about 44 million euros in previews and specials on Thursday. In its first weekend, worldwide, it raised about 587 million euros, and considering that the film did not premiere in China, the numbers are very encouraging for an industry that has lost a lot due to the pandemic.

Since the premiere of “Star Wars: The Skywalker Rise” in December 2019, before the outbreak of the pandemic, no movie has managed to surpass its $100 million premiere. At a time when many countries are tightening measures again due to the increase in cases of the Covid-19 virus, especially with the emergence of the new Omicron variant, the concern was great. “Over the year, the industry has taken one step forward and then two steps back. The performance of ‘Spider-Man’ is really important,” said Paul DeGarabedian, analyst at comScore.

As the superpowers bear great responsibilities, expectations were exceeded and Peter Parker and his company ended up “saving” Hollywood’s public. In “No Back Home,” “the darkest” since Spider-Man’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker struggles to regain his anonymity — his identity has been revealed by “Mystery” in the previous film — and will seek help from Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch’s character. The cast also has names that evoke plenty of nostalgia, like Williem Dafoe (Green Goblin), Jamie Foxx (Electro), or Alfred Molina (Dr. Octupus), who will play some of the many villains.

The original “Spider-Man,” starring Tobey Maguire in 2002, was the first film in motion picture history to make over $100 million during its opening weekend and the first film dedicated to a superhero. This is the third time that the neighborhood friend has appeared in the cinema: after Tobey Maguire who starred in three films, and Tom Holland who participated in three other films, in addition to his acting in “Avengers: Civil War”, Avengers: Infinite War and Avengers: Endgame — and they signed another trilogy — they followed Andrew Garfield, who starred in two in 2012 and 2014.
