UEFA has confirmed that former striker and coach Manuel Fernandes will be honored on Monday ahead of Portugal's match with Slovenia in the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championships, with a minute of silence.
The request was submitted by the Portuguese Football Federation and UEFA already confirmed at the match organisation meeting that it had been accepted.
Former football player and coach Manuel Fernandez died on Thursday, at the age of 73, after a long illness. He was a Portuguese international on 30 occasions, scoring seven goals.
Manuel Fernandes, born in Sarilhos Pequeños, in Moita, on June 5, 1951, became famous as a player, especially with Sporting, between 1975/76 and 1986/87, after also playing for Mayo Sarilhanse, CUF and Vitória de Setúbal.
After finishing his career as a player, Manuel Fernandes remained linked to football, as a coach, having coached Vitória de Setúbal, Estrela da Amadora, Ovarense, Sporting, Campomaiense, Tercens, Santa Clara, Penafiel and União de Leiria, and in between he coached in Angola, at ASA.
The body supervising European football also confirmed that the roof of the Deutsche Bank Park Stadium, in the German city of Frankfurt, the stadium that will host the match, will be closed during the match.
The match between Portugal and Slovenia is scheduled to start at nine o’clock local time (8 p.m. Lisbon time) and will be managed by Italian Daniele Orsato.
