Old smartphones will no longer support Google services

Android has been around for more than ten years, and in that time many versions have been released, each with its own new features. Not counting the various intermediate versions, we already have more than 10 major OS updates from Google, the latest of which – Android 12 – is about to be officially released.

However, we should not expect all versions to be supported indefinitely. Google has now revealed that some older versions of Android will soon no longer be supported by Google services.

These are the Android versions that will no longer support Google services

Google has sent an email to users of these devices, warning that as of September 27 their phones/tablets will no longer be able to connect to Google services.

According to the company, on smartphones running Android 2.3.7 and earlier, “Account login in Google Apps will no longer be supported“.

The affected versions are:

  • Android 1.0, 1.1
  • 1.5 cupcakes
  • 1.6 Donuts
  • 2.0 eclair
  • 2.2 Froyo
  • 2.3 Gingerbread

Version 2.3.7 was released in September 2011, so it had 10 years of support. Given that the smartphone will not remain fully usable after 10 years, it is unlikely that many users will be affected by this decision by the mountain View giant.

However, if you are one of them, it is time to buy a new smartphone. Even if you don’t have a big budget, you are guaranteed to be able to find deals for well under 100€, which will save you much more than a smartphone launched 10 years ago.
