Boat with 20 dead people drives to shore

Authorities in the Caribbean and Caicos Islands have launched an investigation, after a boat carrying 20 people, including two children, drifted ashore in the archipelago. Writes Watchman.

According to the newspaper, there is no indication that anything criminal has happened, and investigators are now trying to find out what really happened.

Fishermen discovered the pontoon boat on Thursday.

Police Inspector Trevor Botting says the boat may have belonged outside the Caribbean, and that it may have been a different destination than that of the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The police are now trying to identify the dead.

It will take some time to complete this work. In any case, this is a tragic situation where so many people have lost their lives, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones. “We will do everything we can to identify them and contact their families,” Botting said in a statement.

According to the Guardian, the archipelago often attracts people from Haiti, who are fleeing political challenges and rising gang crime in their homeland.
