YouTube is getting official support for something highly desirable on the iPhone. But there is a catch

If you have an Android smartphone, Picture-in-Picture on YouTube is nothing new to you. This has been around for a long time, and basically allows you to use other apps, while minimizing the YouTube window to a location on the screen of your choosing.

Speaking to MacRumors, YouTube is now claiming that this Picture-in-Picture feature is also officially coming to the iPhone and iPad app. But there is one problem that you should be aware of.

Picture in Picture No iPhone and iPad skins on YouTube Premium

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows users to watch YouTube videos in a small window while browsing outside the YouTube app on their mobile device at the same time. We are launching PiP for Youtube Premium members on iOS and plan to release it to all iOS users in the US as well.”

On the other hand, it is good to note that Android has PiP without having to resort to YouTube Premium. But on iOS it looks, at least at an early stage, that this scenario would be different.

As we can read, Google “plans” to release picture-in-picture to all iOS users, but only in the United States. We hope he changes his mind and does so globally.

In case you didn’t know, for a YouTube video to keep playing audio only in the background, you really need to get YouTube Premium. Either on iOS or Android. On iOS, it was possible to use the Picture-in-Picture functionality through Safari, but this was eventually disabled.
