Flavins worked at the company that developed the algorithm, DeepMind, which was acquired by Google, and which was founded by Demis Hassabis and run by 2024 laureate John M. Gumper. The announcement was made on Wednesday, by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Hugo Benedones was part of the initial group for this project, working for the company in the UK, from 2015 to 2019, where he created the algorithm that predicts the structure of proteins based on their amino acid sequences.

The Porto College of Engineering-trained engineer's involvement in developing AlphaFold resulted in a 2020 scientific article published in the journal Nature, co-authored by John M. Gember, Demis Hassabis, and others.

Hugo Benedones is the co-founder and current CTO of Inductiva.AI, a Portuguese AI startup.

The municipality of Chaves took advantage of social media to congratulate Hugo Benedones, a former student of Escola Dr. Julio Martins.

Support our work. Support nearby journalism.

At a time when information is more important than ever, support regional and local journalism. Access to most VTM news is (still) free, but it's not free, journalism costs money and requires investment. This contribution is a way to provide direct support to A Voz de Trás-os-Montes and its journalists. Our counterpart is independent and local journalism, but not only that. It means continuing with the media despite all possibilities of quarantine, without stopping for a single day.
