PSP reported today that holding the 11th Marathon and the 24th Half Marathon in Lisbon will require several streets to be closed to traffic in several areas of the capital, as well as Cascais and Oeiras.

According to a statement issued by the Lisbon City Command (Cometlis) of the Public Security Police (PSP), due to the race being held, several “traffic restrictions” will be imposed from 5:30 a.m. on Sunday.

In the municipalities of Cascais and Oeiras, Cometles said it expects that as of 07:00, Avenida da Rebolica towards Gencho, Farol do Cabo Raso and back to Cascais will be completely closed to traffic.

Avenida Rey Humberto II d'Italia, Avenida Dom Carlos, Alameda Compatientes Grande Guerra, Avenida Marginal, towards Lisbon Oeiras, and Avenida Ferreira Godinho, at the Cruz Quebrada intersection, will also be closed to traffic.

In Lisbon, PSP warns of accessibility to Rotunda da Ford, Avenida D. João II, Avenida Mar Vermelho, Alameda dos Oceanos, Praça Príncipe Perfeito, Avenida Ulisses, Sportv Rotunda, Alameda dos Oceanos, Expo'98 Rotunda, Rua da Cintura do Porto de Lisboa to the old Praça 25 de Abril, and from Infante D. Henrique to Praça do Comércio, Rua da Prata, Rua dos Fanqueiros, Praça da Figueira, Rua Betesga and Rossio.

The 2024 Lisbon Marathon takes place today, starting in Cascais, at 08:00, and arriving at Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon, on a complete route along the sea and the Tagus River, while the half marathon begins at the Vasco da Gama Bridge, at 10:30, and ends. Also in Praça do Comércio.

Tickets for the 2024 edition of the Lisbon Marathon were sold out approximately three months before the race, with eight thousand registering, including six thousand foreign athletes, from 90 different nationalities.

According to the organizers, the registration of two thousand Portuguese people for the race is a record for national athletes in the marathon.

The marathon will bring together two former world distance champions to Lisbon: Eritrean Girmay Gebrselassie, who in 2015 became the youngest person to win the title, at 19 years old, and Kenyan Geoffrey Kirui, who became champion in 2017.

Gebrselassie is the athlete who holds the best personal record, with a time of 2:05.34 hours, which he achieved in 2022. As for the women’s sector, Kenyans Raelle Nguryatoki Kinyara (2:25.23) and Cynthia Kosgei (2:25.24) stand out.

In the half marathon, the main attraction will be Ethiopian Mosenet Geremew, who ran a personal best of 59.11 minutes, one of nine men to run the marathon in less than 2:03 hours.
