At an event that brought together representatives of the scientific community in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) praised the importance of the Rio de Janeiro State University of Science, Technology and Innovation in the state. Under the title “The Importance of Uerj for CT&I in Rio de Janeiro”, the ceremony was held in the Pedro Calmon Hall of the UFRJ Science and Culture Forum, in the Praia Vermelha Campus, last Thursday (26), and was attended by representatives of the three federal higher education institutions present in the state (UFRJ and UFF and Unirio); Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz); and the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF).
The event was attended by SBPC President, Renato Jeanine Ribeiro, who led the celebratory table; Secretary of Science and Technology of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Teresa Paiva; Dean of Org, Gulnar Azevedo y Silva; Vice-Rector, Bruno Diosdara; All professors and professors at the university.
Janine Ribeiro highlighted that the SBPC, as an entity representing Brazilian scientists, is keen to be present in this moment of necessary solidarity with Uerj. “The main point is to offer our support to the university at a difficult time, defending firstly a decent budget for the Org University as well as institutionalism and respect for the democratically elected rectory,” he stressed. He also referred to the Legislative Council's demand to increase Jörg's budget necessary to meet student aid demands. He concluded: “From what has been widely explained, the additional amounts allocated to non-quota students during the pandemic period should be re-evaluated in order to be reconfigured as much as possible, as long as there are resources for this.” .
The Dean of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio), José da Costa Filho, highlighted that when accepting this position, every dean undertakes the task of doing something relevant to education in the country, even knowing the difficulties he will face. National Counselor of the SBPC and Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Professor Ligia Bahia, pointed out that the current crisis in student aid policy is linked to the difficulty of maintaining the integration process in public universities. “We have a problem, but we cannot be defeated. What was a victory cannot turn into a defeat. Integration in public universities must continue, it is the solution for the country. We have witnessed the destruction of the welfare state. It is not just about Jörg, we have to To offer all our solidarity to public universities and the integration process.”
Professor Waldeck Carneiro, representing the Federal University of Fluminense (UFF), said that the main carrier of student aid is “accommodation, transportation and food”. He said that financing this assistance represents an important national discussion that needs to be held. “The question that arises for us is not only because of the challenge facing Jörg at this moment, but I remember the terrible difficulties that federal universities are experiencing in financing their daily obligations. Mobility, food and housing are expenses of the state and the public sphere at various levels. Should resources for these items really come from the university budget? At the end of the ceremony, the Regional Secretary of the SBPC in Rio de Janeiro, Tiago Gonçalves, read a message from the institution in solidarity with OERG, noting that both the training of students, the production of knowledge and the numerous efforts offered by the University in extension projects are a source of pride for the State of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. “The SBPC in Rio joins initiatives to strengthen institutions and budget in Uerj, and we support and are committed to the mission of continuing the fight for more resources for education, science and technology,” the letter says.
Gulnar Azevedo e Silva thanked SBPC for organizing the event and emphasized how much Uerj has contributed to the development of the state. “Among the many benefits that Uerj generates, I would like to start by talking about its importance in the field of education. In addition to the Faculty of Education, which is located on the Maracanã campus, we have two teacher training schools, one in Duque de Caxias and the other in São Gonçalo. In the health field, we have Pedro Ernesto University Hospital, which today serves as a major reference for very complex procedures in the state of Rio.
