Reindeer Baby, Netflix | The “Baby Reindeer” lawsuit is in the process of going to trial

A judge in California has decided that the legal process can move to the next stage, Variety reports.

British woman Fiona Harvey has sued Netflix for $170 million, or 1.8 billion kroner, because she believes she was profiled as a convicted stalker in the series Baby Reindeer.

In the sentencing decision, Judge Gary Klausner stated that “Baby Reindeer” begins with the vignette “This is a true story,” which viewers must believe. Therefore, Harvey has enough reasons to sue Netflix over how she was portrayed in the series.

However, the judge rejected many of Harvey's claims for damages, including copyright infringement.

“Baby Reindeer” is an autobiographical miniseries, written by lead actor Richard Gadd, about how he is stalked by a woman – Martha in the series. The series depicts her eventually receiving a prison sentence, which never happened in reality.

Fiona Harvey's name is not mentioned in the series itself, but her identity quickly became known online after Baby Reindeer became a global hit this summer. She also appeared in a YouTube interview with Piers Morgan.

Baby Reindeer also won six Emmy Awards recently, including a recent Best Miniseries category. Success may still cost Netflix dearly.
