First impressions of the MIX Flip: Has Xiaomi made a mistake?

After a lot of waiting, Xiaomi has finally brought one of its foldable smartphones to the global market. The brand has chosen the MIX Flip case shape to open the wings and the foldable device will officially arrive in Portugal. But did Xiaomi make a mistake?

Xiaomi seems to want to position itself in the premium segment with the MIX Flip, as it will cost €1,299.99. any, 50 euros more than the big competitor Samsung Galaxy Flip6. The market response to this launch and its price will show whether it was a successful bet or whether the brand made a mistake by launching it at this price.

In terms of its characteristics, the Xiaomi Mix Flip is a real top of the range, and this can be seen from the first impression we had with the device in hand. The 6.86-inch AMOLED internal display has an excellent brightness of 3,000 nits.

As for wrinkles, the question is: What wrinkles? It takes a lot of effort to ensure that it causes minimal discomfort during use. It seems that in this area, Xiaomi waited for the right time to launch the equipment. Although, of course, it is necessary to stand the “test of time.”

Moving back, we also have a 4.01-inch AMOLED display with the same 3,000 nits peak brightness, which is probably the best looking out there on the Flip. We can use it for different tasks without opening the device, such as writing messages, checking maps, or opening the cameras to take a selfie with the rear cameras.

Xiaomi also opts for a different camera configuration here than we're used to in devices with just two lenses: we have a 50-megapixel main camera, but instead of an ultra-wide-angle camera, this one has a 50-megapixel telephoto lens. In other words, priority is given to the lens that will provide images with up to 2x optical zoom and high-quality portraits. There too, I think Xiaomi bet on the “right horse”.

Bigger battery, but no wireless charging

The MIX Flip is a smartphone, open and closed, that's a little thicker than the Galaxy Z Flip6, but there's nothing to worry about. This eventually makes room for a premium 4780mAh battery. One point we don't appreciate is the fact that it doesn't have wireless charging. However, it's worth noting that Samsung charges wired at 25W, while Xiaomi charges up to 67W.

The first impressions we got with the Mix Flip were very positive. There are good choices the brand has made in this model, but the higher price than the direct competition may hinder more successful adoption of the equipment. We will see if the brand has prepared some advertising campaigns that might make it more “appetizing”.
