She added that many American bases in Iraq, which were used by the coalition, are scheduled to be closed, but bilateral cooperation between the United States and Iraq will continue.

The United States currently has about 2,500 soldiers in Iraq, and President Joe Biden's administration will not say whether they will be completely withdrawn from Iraq during the next year.

Iraq has long demanded that foreign forces leave the country.

The air base is scheduled to close

According to Iraqi sources, the first base to be dismantled is the Ain al-Asad base in western Iraq, near the border with Syria. Sources say that emptying this base will begin in November.

Norway has long been responsible for guarding and security duties at this air base and drones, and about 30 Norwegian soldiers are stationed there. The Norwegian contribution is known as Task Force Viking.

A smaller Norwegian force is also stationed in Baghdad, training Iraqi security forces as part of the coalition's Operation Inherent Resolve.

Norway has been participating in the operation in Iraq since March 2015.

Political burden

The presence of Western forces in Iraq is seen as political pressure on Prime Minister Muhammad al-Sudani and his government, which has close ties to Iran.

Iraq has long struggled to balance its relationship with the United States and Iran.

– We thank the government for the decision to expel the international coalition force, says the founder of the Iranian-backed Iraqi Asaib Ahl al-Haq militia.

They were behind several attacks against US forces in the country.
