A screenshot of what was allegedly a statement from former President Jimmy Carter's administration quickly spread on social media on Tuesday.

The message said the 99-year-old man had died.

Several US media outlets reported on the death note, which turned out to be false. This was confirmed by a Carter administration spokesman. Reuters.

The message says he died Tuesday night local time at his home in Georgia. However, the announcement was not posted on the Carter administration's website or social media.

The former president had been ill for a long time. Since February 2023, he had only received palliative care. After several hospital stays, he decided he did not want further treatment.

Jason Carter's grandson said in May that his grandfather's life was coming to an end. He made the remarks after visiting the former president.

“I said, ‘Grandpa, people ask me how you are, and I say I don’t know.’” “Well, I don’t even know myself,” he said. “But he’s still here,” said the younger Carter from the podium.
