“Summer Life Sciences” in Fornia de Fungalvaz and the Almonda Ecological Corridor: Gazeta Rural

In the year that the “Ciência Viva no Verão” program celebrates its 28th edition, the municipality of Torres Novas, together with the Centro Ciência Viva do Alviela – Carsscope, joins the project for the fourth consecutive year, to implement two routes that aim to highlight the geographical and biodiversity of the municipality.

The first activity is scheduled for July 28, starting at 9 am at the old Fungalvaz Primary School, with the aim of raising awareness of the biodiversity and geodiversity of Fungalvaz Fórnea.

On a route of about five kilometers, it will be possible to observe two characteristic elements of geology and geomorphology linked to the “karst”: the frontal valley and the flowing valley. The activity starts in Fungalvaz towards the fórnea, a natural amphitheater, where there are also two caves with prehistoric occupation, dating back to the Paleolithic era. The route will continue along the Ribeira da Biselja, traveling through the compact and carved valley, where you will discover the fluviokarst valley. Along the way you can see the typical Mediterranean vegetation with its trees and shrubs.

The second activity will be held on August 25, starting at 9 am in the municipal market, with the aim of raising awareness of the biodiversity and geographical diversity of the Almond Ecological Corridor.

Along a six-kilometre trail, participants are invited to explore the biodiversity associated with the riverside ecosystems, from animals and plants to fungi and lichens. Passing through old water-using buildings, it will be possible to observe the geographic diversity characterised by limestone, which is formed as a result of the deposition of carbonates on sediments and organic remains, such as stems, leaves and trunks of plants.
