The boy was found safe and sound in the town of Klosterlen, about 250 kilometres (155 miles) southwest of Berlin, on Saturday evening after his mobile phone signal was tracked.

“We are all happy that the boy is back safe and sound,” a local police spokesman said.

The teenager disembarked from the Caribbean Princess cruise ship in the northern German port city of Warnemünde on Thursday. The boy has Asperger's syndrome and through computer games he came into contact with another teenager in a small German town who also has Asperger's syndrome.

The 19-year-old picked up the American teenager in the city of Rostock near Warnemünde and took him to his home in Klosterlen.

The police do not suspect anything criminal.
