A “historic night” at the Faculty of Medicine on May 21 charts the path of five researchers who have changed and are still changing the scientific scenario
The event will take place on May 21, starting at 6:15 p.m., at the CARL Experience Center, and its primary focus will be the topic of women in medicine and science. For the organizers, this is a unique opportunity to honor women who inspire new generations, highlighting their stories, challenges and achievements.
Among the inspiring women are FMRP professors and researchers: Marguerite de Castro, Silvana Quintana, Mariana Osaco, Lucien Loris, and María Auxiliadora, who will share their experiences, from the challenges they faced to the victories they achieved throughout their careers. “By telling their stories, they highlight the crucial importance of female presence in fields historically dominated by men, thus encouraging a more equitable and inclusive future for all involved in the search for knowledge and scientific innovation,” says Vittoria Luisa Pavone Cancha. Inspiring women
– Margaret De Castro*, a professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine at FMRP, was the first woman to direct FMRP. His administration was from 2016 to 2020, the same period during which he was President of the Deliberative Council of the Hospital das Clínicas (HC) of the FMRP and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for Teaching, Research and Aid Support (Faepa). From HC-FMRP. Margaret holds a medical degree from the Federal University of Triangolo Minero, a master's degree and doctorate in clinical medicine from the University of the South Pacific, and a postdoctoral degree from the National Institute of Health in the United States of America. Researcher in the fields of physiology, clinical endocrinology, and molecular biology, with an emphasis on the areas of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulation, glucocorticoid resistance and molecular pathogenesis of endocrine tumors.
– Silvana Quintana*, Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at FMRP, was Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at FMRP, from 2017 to 2019, and General Director of the Reference Center for Women's Health (Mater), from 2009 to 2013. Graduated in Medicine from the University of Santa Maria Maria Federal, received his MD and PhD at FMRP and post-doc at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, USA. He actively participates in several scientific societies such as the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the State of São Paulo and the Brazilian Federation of Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Her area of expertise is Obstetrics and Gynecology, mainly focusing on the following topics: high-risk pregnancy, vertical transmission of infectious and parasitic diseases, HIV/AIDS infection and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
– Mariana Osako* is a professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology and Pathogens and Pathogens at FMRP and coordinates the University Education Evaluation Center at the unit. Mariana graduated in Biomedicine from the Federal University of São Paulo, received her MSc, PhD and post-doctoral degrees from Osaka University, Japan, and was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Vascular and Epigenetic Medicine at the Japanese University. The RANKL system is studied in the differentiation of white and beige adipose tissue, mitochondrial dynamics in skeletal muscle and phenotypic change in macrophages. The interaction of SARS-COV-2 with adipocytes is also part of his line of research.
– Lucien Lores dos Santos* is Chair of the FMRP Human Rights Commission. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Inclusion and Belonging Committee, Deputy Director of the Dr. Joel Domingos Machado School Health Center and Deputy Coordinator of the HC-FMRP Coreme for the biennium 2023-2025. Professor in the Department of Social Medicine at FMRP, holds a medical degree from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, with a master's and doctorate from FMRP. He has experience in the field of family and community medicine, working mainly on the following topics: primary health care, populations living in vulnerable situations, especially populations deprived of liberty.
– María Auxiliadora Martinez* is a full professor at FMRP, where she completed her master's and doctoral degrees. She graduated in medicine from Santa Casa de Misericordia School of Medicine in Vitoria, SE, and received a specialist degree in cardiology and intensive medicine and a postdoctoral degree from Mayo Clinic, Rochester/Minnesota/USA. She is currently an Intensivist and Intensive Medicine Residency Coordinator at HC-FMRP. He works in the field of intensive medicine with a focus on the following topics: hemodynamic monitoring, humanities, healthcare-related infections, vital signs and sepsis.
