Today, Sunday, dozens of students walked out of the graduation ceremony at Duke University in Durham (North Carolina), in protest against Jerry Seinfeld's invitation to give a speech and obtain a doctorate. A proud reason Written by University President Vincent Price, New York Times reports.
The Jewish-American comedian — a father of two college students and an “active promoter” of the organization, in the newspaper’s words — has publicly shown his support for Israel since the attack carried out by Hamas on October 7, which killed 1,200 people. It took 252 hostages (although Israeli forces have since killed more than 35,000 Palestinians, according to health authorities in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas). His wife also funded a pro-Israel counter-protest at UCLA last week, which turned violent.
Many left the concert as soon as Seinfeld, visibly nervous, took the stage. Among the attendees were Palestinian flags and chants of “Free Palestine” – with shouts of anger coming from future graduates and other people in the rows surrounding Wallace Wade Stadium. As the comedian spoke, graduates leaving the venue chanted from the parking lot, “Reveal, pull, we won’t stop, we won’t rest.” Vanity Fair adds:.
This is another protest happening in A Campus A university in the United States, demanding that universities sever their ties with arms producers and other companies that profit from war and grant amnesty to students and professors who have been subjected to disciplinary action or dismissed for protesting, Remember Reuters news agency.
Others in attendance criticized the protesters' stance, chanting the comedian's name as he received the honorary title and spoke. Seinfeld focused on giving life advice to students, was more circumspect and did not mention protest in his speech. However, he said, to applause, that he grew up “as a Jewish boy in New York,” which is a “privilege” for anyone who “wants to be a comedian.”
