A major fire in a metal factory in Berlin

The fire broke out on the first floor of a factory building in Lechterfelde, southwest of the German capital. The fire completely engulfed an art room on the first floor, and the fire spread from there, according to a fire service spokesman.

– The building is now completely engulfed in flames on four floors, says official spokesman Adrian Wenzel to the German newspaper picture.

He says it's not possible to enter the building. A fire crew of approximately 130 people is working at the scene.

-We only extinguish from the outside. Wenzel says it is no longer possible to control the fire inside the building.

There are also many chemicals stored in the building. The fire service sent out a warning about the dangerous smoke and asked residents to keep doors and windows closed.

-We can confirm that chemicals are also burning in the building. Sulfuric acid and copper cyanide are stored in the building. There is also the possibility that hydrogen cyanide could be released into the air with the smoke, the fire service wrote in the warning.

Bild newspaper wrote that the factory belongs to the Diehl group and that its subsidiary Diehl Defense, a partner with the German armed forces, also has one of its main offices on the same street.

Diehl Defense produces, among other things, the IRIS-T air defense system, used in Ukraine.

According to the spokesman, no injuries were reported, and all people in the area were evacuated.
