The Serrapilheira Institute launches two notifications for young scientists

FAPESP Agency – Until January 25, the Serrabelheira Institute is accepting registrations for two new public calls to support researchers.

One is aimed at scientists who have permanent jobs in teaching and research institutions and have projects in the fields of natural sciences, mathematics and computer science. The other targets Black and Indigenous scientists without a permanent contract and who intend to pursue a postdoctoral degree in the field of ecology.

Up to 42 researchers will be selected in two calls for proposals, which are being implemented in partnership with Research Support Foundations (FAPs) from different states and with the National Council of State Research Support Institutions (Confap). The investment will amount to at least R$ 21 million, including the payment of scholarships and research funding.

The first notification is linked to the Seventh General Call for Support for Science and targets early-career scientists with original, bold and risky research projects in the fields of natural sciences, mathematics and computer science. Between 10 and 30 projects will be selected that seek to answer a key fundamental question.

Each of those approved will receive an amount between R$200,000 and R$700,000, spread over five years. They will also have access to additional resources to invest in training and include people from underrepresented groups on their teams.

Scholars who have obtained a doctoral degree and are associated with higher education and research institutions as teachers and researchers can participate. This bond must be signed for the first time between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2023. The period increases by two years for women with children. Registration details are available at notice.

In the second notice, linked to the second call for support for Black and Indigenous postdoctoral students in ecology and exclusively for Black and Indigenous scientists, the focus is on researchers with projects in the field of ecology who aim to obtain, in the medium term, a formal position as a teacher or researcher .

Researchers who completed their PhD between 1 January 2013 and 30 June 2024 can participate, a period that is also extended by up to two years in the case of women with children. Interested parties must not have a formal link with any scientific and technological institution at the time of signing the contract.

Up to 12 candidates will be selected. In addition to a monthly grant of R$8,000, those selected will receive between R$550,000 and R$800,000 to fund the research for three years, renewable for another two years.
