The director of the infectious diseases unit at Assuta Ashdod University Hospital, Tal Broch, identified the stomach disease as shigella disease. The outbreak is believed to be caused by food cooked by civilians and sent to forces in Gaza. These foods may be contaminated with shigella bacteria because they were not refrigerated during transportation or reheated before consumption.

– When soldiers get diarrhea, the poor sanitary conditions inherent on the battlefield lead to person-to-person transmission. – says Broch.

What is shigella?

Shigella is a type of bacteria. When it enters the body, it causes dysentery, which is called shigellosis. Its symptoms are fever, bloody or prolonged diarrhea, severe stomach cramps, and dehydration.

If left untreated, shigella can cause serious illness and even death, especially when the bacteria enter the bloodstream. Children, people with HIV, diabetes or cancer and those suffering from malnutrition are extremely vulnerable.

Shigella is spread through direct or indirect contact with the feces of an infected person. This communication can be done in the following ways:

  • Eating food prepared by someone infected with shigella
  • – Drinking water contaminated with sewage
  • Contact with toiletries or other items contaminated with shigella by an infected person
  • Changing diapers for a child infected with shigella
  • Touching feces during sex with an infected person

To prevent shigella, you should wash your hands frequently before cooking, after using the bathroom or changing diapers, and before sexual activity. Many conditions can be treated by drinking plenty of water and rest.
