The drawing buildingA painting by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva was sold at Christie’s auction house in Paris for 245,000 euros. The work from 1968 has been put up for auction with an estimate of between 200 and 300 thousand euros.
The painting, which measures 1.27 x 1.13 metres, is signed and dated by the artist, comes from a European collection after being acquired from the Appelicat-Brazzan gallery in Paris, and was put up for auction in person on Wednesday.
The painting was listed in one of two contemporary art auctions this week — and the other Connected Both reached a total sales value of 10.7 million euros, according to a statement from Christie’s issued on Friday. Vieira da Silva appeared in a group of works created by women, alongside Germaine Richier, Etel Adnan, and Anna Eva Bergman.
In July 2020 oil painting Armed roundsThis painting, which was created by the Portuguese painter in the same year, was displayed among works of art from the twentieth century at Christie’s International Auction, where its value ranged between 600,000 and 800,000 euros, but it was never sold.
In 2018, another work by Vieira da Silva, Incendi 1, was auctioned in London by the same auction house for a record amount for the artist – 2.290 million euros. Painted in 1944, its original estimate was between €1.2 million and €1.6 million.
Born in Lisbon in 1908, Vieira da Silva moved to the French capital when she was 19 to study during a period of great artistic activity, eventually settling in the city, where she died in 1992.
