– 20 tons

Authorities estimate that the whale lay dead on the beach for ten days before it was found.

It was a local fisherman who spotted the whale and informed the authorities.

Work to examine the giant whale was delayed, because crews struggled to reach the discovery site.

– no connection

Jaime Coronel, spokesman for Uruguay’s Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture, said the animal will be examined by experts so they can determine the cause of death.

The spokesperson says they have not received reports that the whale was infected with bird flu, which has been detected in whales in a number of other countries recently, including Chile, Argentina – and our neighboring country Sweden.

Ultimately, the blue whale will be moved offshore, in a process the spokesman described as “extremely difficult.”
