Voltage. Spanish women refuse to play for the national team after being called up

aContrary to the Royal Spanish Football Federation’s position on a “safe environment”, the group that makes up the Spanish women’s national team reacted on Monday to the recent call-up of Montse Tomé – the successor to the sacked Jorge. Velda – after they confirmed that they will not play until changes are made to the structure of the body that supervises Spanish football.

Aside from Ginni Hermoso, after the controversial kiss from Luis Rubiales – the president who has since resigned – during the Women’s World Cup celebrations, the new selector summoned some of the players who had signed a letter demanding the Spanish Football Federation and urging them to make a quick decision. Players reacted in a statement.

“In the following days This statementWe want to announce to the public that nothing different has been communicated to any member of the Spanish Football Federation and we therefore expressly request that the information communicated publicly is accurate.”

The footballers’ group also guarantees that it will study the “possible legal consequences” imposed by the Spanish Federation.

See the full statement:

“The players of the women’s senior national football team intend to announce, following the call-up and the subsequent press conference of the new coach of the national team, Montse Toomey, the following: Our statement of 22 September 2023 makes it clear and without the possibility of other explanation, our office will not be summoned for reasons Justified, these statements remain completely true.

In the days following this statement, we want to announce to the public that nothing different has been communicated to any member of the Spanish Football Federation, which is why we expressly request that the information communicated publicly is accurate.

As elite professional players and after everything that happened today, we will examine the possible legal consequences that the Spanish Football Federation exposes us to, which puts us on the list from which we have requested not to be called up for reasons that have previously been explained publicly and in more detail. To RFEF, thus making the best decision for our future and health.

It seems appropriate for us to highlight, in this sense, that the summons was not timely executed, in accordance with Art. 3.2 of Annex I of the FIFA Player Status and Transfer Regulations, therefore we are aware that the Spanish Football Federation is not in a position to require us to do so. “We again regret that our union has put us in a situation we never wanted.”
