The study uses artificial intelligence to predict weight in obese patients

A multicenter observational study of more than 10,000 patients undergoing bariatric surgery in countries such as Brazil, the Netherlands, Italy, Sweden and Mexico developed a mathematical model based on… Machine learning To evaluate the weight trajectory of this population during the first 5 postoperative years. This research is the first to use artificial intelligence to make pre-operative predictions of weight trajectories up to five years after patients undergo the most common types of obesity surgery (gastroplasty and gastric sleeve).

The study was published in the important international scientific journal The Lancet, and among the authors of the study is Dr. Ricardo Cohen, coordinator of the Specialized Center for Obesity and Diabetes at the Alemão Oswaldo Cruz Hospital. At the beginning of the month, the doctor was elected global president of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), its acronym in English, International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders.

The mathematical model developed took into account patients’ weight trajectories based on seven preoperative variables: age, weight, height, smoking history, status and duration of type 2 diabetes, and type of intervention.

“This model can help clinical practice optimize individual weight loss trajectories, helping obesity specialists to increasingly use precision medicine to predict outcomes before surgery. In this way, it will be possible to work with increasingly effective individualized strategies and provide the best results in the medium term. For patients undergoing bariatric surgery.” Dr. Ricardo Cohen says.
