The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is a radical change in tram design
We take action Car of the year in the worldWorld Electric Car of the Year and World Car Design of the Year, and after a few laps, we understood the IONIQ 6's arguments.
Although an improvement on what the IONIQ 5 offered, this proposal from Hyundai goes even further: it has bold styling, relentless sports car features, and — we warn you — it won't please the Greeks and Trojans.
Hyundai has established itself as a leading supplier of electric vehicles. Hey Ionic 6 It is a sedan with a bold yet sophisticated design and equipped with the latest technology. Despite its sports car appearance, this electric car combines spacious space, family style, without the autonomy that makes us anxious on long trips.
The car shares many components with the IONIQ 5 SUV, but is more aerodynamic. Naturally, the DNA is there, so it's no surprise that two modern IONIQ vehicles recently took home the World Electric Car of the Year award.
This version 6 comes with rear-wheel drive (the version launched in Portugal) or all-wheel drive. The brand also offers two battery options, the larger offering an estimated driving range of 614 km (WLTP combined cycle). This is what equips the car we drive.
design That would collect glances along the way
Well, it's a cliche, but we have no doubt that it will be just that: first it's weird, then it sticks in your head!
In fact, after sitting behind the wheel of this machine, the sensations tell us that among the many experiences we have already had, the car fits us like a glove. Comfort, space, ease of driving and safety, you can feel it.
From the outside of the car, people admire the design. Some like it, others find it weird, but it doesn't go unnoticed. The aerodynamic aspect is striking.
This tram is strangely wide. In fact, the exterior doesn't anticipate what we find inside: "almost a personal shelter," as Hyundai says.
- 4855 mm long;
- Width 1880 mm;
- Height 1495 mm;
- Wheelbase 2950 mm.
The wheelbase and flat floor ensure ample legroom for front passengers, providing the comfort and practicality that Hyundai aims for.
It should be noted Interior lighting synchronized with IONIQ 6 speedsThe door surfaces are smooth and without protruding fasteners, and the interactive steering wheel has LED technology.
The IONIQ 6's side is notable for its automatic retractable handles which, while simple, won't have the most intuitive shape.
Hey The IONIQ 6 offers 401 liters of storage spaceAnd additional space in the front (so-called franc) with 45 liters of storage space for the rear-wheel drive model and 14.5 liters for the all-wheel drive version.
The luggage compartment has a shape that may not be the most convenient due to its door, especially if we want to use the space to store larger items.
Technology enriches the future of electricity
The dome-shaped cabin is equipped with a centrally located ergonomic console, which, according to Hyundai, reduces distractions and promotes intuitive driving.
At the front, the clearly marked panel contains two integrated screens: the infotainment system touch screen 12.3-inch and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
The interesting point is that the South Korean brand has made almost all the buttons disappear from the doors. I migrated them to the central console.
For example, on the driver's door, next to the unlock handle, there are two memory-only buttons for setting some user preferences. The car adjusts the seat in terms of height and distance, in addition to providing the driver with other customizations.
There is also an option Head width. A technology that displays information related to vehicle speed, traffic directions, and other driving information on the glass in front of the driver's eyes.
Personally, we like driving with this information in front of us. The system can be adapted and raised for the comfort of our eyes. For those who don't like it... turning it off is just one click away.
Audio system beloved BOSE is available as eight high-performance speakers, optimized and tuned for a sensory experience.
The IONIQ 6 allows charging any electrical device with a power of up to 3.6 kW, thanks to the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology integrated into the 230 V socket.
The charging port has a cooling function that prevents the device from overheating.
In addition to all this, Hyundai has equipped this machine with the eCall system, which automatically alerts emergency services in the event of an accident, and Regenerative Shift paddles (with i-Pedal). This system works very well, and for urban cruising, the i-Pedal is a huge help, both in saving brake pads and in regenerating energy.

Regarding driver assistance systems and everything related to driver aids, we have to understand that one size does not fit all. Therefore, everyone should take advantage of the options and adjust them to suit their driving style. Hyundai's software allows just that. In fact, some of the stimulation is excessive and can serve as a distraction.
And the performance of this bold proposal from Hyundai?
IONIQ 6 is the second The Hyundai model will be assembled on the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP)., which allows two-way charging. Its architecture can support 400V or 800V charging structures, with 800V charging as standard. Additionally, it can accommodate 400V charging without the need for adapters or additional components.
With a 350 kW charger, this Hyundai electric car can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes and Get a range of 351 km in just 15 minutes.
The rear-wheel drive system and a 77.4 kWh battery ensure 168 kW/225 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. A single charge provides a maximum range of 614 km (WLTP combined cycle).
What is offered is within what a standard driver in Portugal needs. Stick to the speed rules, have a car that can handle itself in the toughest moments, and be confident that the durability will be as promised by the brand.
price
IONIQ 6 is an electric car that respects sustainability using modern materials. Additionally, it is equipped with a 77.4 kWh, 800-volt battery for ultra-fast charging. The model we tested, the Vanguard Edition, also features a more generous level of equipment. Therefore, the company did not want to make a "cheap" car.
In Portugal, ver beloved The Hyundai IONIQ 6 is available at €59,395.20, and the Vanguard edition is available at €64,795.20.
Judgment
After several hundred kilometers behind the wheel of this tram, we highlight some positive points. In preferences we have to mention the overall driving feel. Passenger space is very generous. It is also important to highlight, as we already did in IONIQ 5, the quality of batteries and the characteristics that are becoming more important: Vehicle to Load (V2L). This means that the car can power your home, using the energy available in the batteries.
The range is more than enough for most people looking for everyday use. However, although the brand mentioned an estimated range of 614 km, we couldn't get close: in "mixed" driving, the car guaranteed us a range closer to 550 km. In terms of consumption, as we mentioned, the brand indicates 14.3 kilowatt-hours. In our case, it was slightly higher, due to the more aggressive driving mentioned above. In general, in terms of efficiency, the car is very balanced.
When it comes to what we like least, we can't help but mention the rear design. That twin wing looks a bit aggressive, though it certainly helps with the drag coefficient. The shape of the luggage compartment entrance may somewhat limit the use of this storage space.
Like the IONIQ 5, we tried using the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto entertainment system, but again, that wasn't possible. To take advantage of these systems we had to connect the smartphone cable to the USB A port (next to the wireless phone charging base in the center console).
As mentioned earlier, there are excessive alerts while driving. If they are not adjusted, they can become a distraction.
As a footnote, there is a test promise for the IONIQ 6 with 18-inch wheels. Change brings us better consumption and can also be a good purchase for your garage!
