An official source in the company revealed to Negócios that “the new Mercadona supermarket, the second in the municipality of Gondomar, will open on the 4th of October”.

With a sales area of ​​about 1,900 square metres, Mercadona de S. Cosme “will provide about 75 new, stable and high-quality jobs, with contracts open from day one, thus contributing to job creation,” the office said. The same person in charge of the Spanish retail stores.

Since its arrival in Portugal, Mercadona has directly contributed €1,297 million to GDP, generated €4,422 million in sales in the entire production chain and created 55,655 direct, indirect and induced jobs.

These are the three main conclusions of a study on the economic impact of the Spanish supermarket chain in Portugal, prepared by the University of Minho’s Economic and Trade Policy Research Center and Ivy (Valencia Institute of Economic Research).

According to the same study, for every euro of revenue generated in Mercadona supermarkets, nine are generated in the economy, and for each job, more than five new jobs are created in the country.

In terms of taxes, the Spanish retailer delivered more than 726.5 million euros between 2019 and 2022.
