A ticket for the Lisbon metro? From now on you only need a bank card to get in – exe

For those who use the Lisbon Metro sporadically, and do not use passes, the task of buying a ticket or loading the Viva Viagem Card into the corresponding machines, in order to be able to use this transport, has become easier. From today, it will be possible to ride the metro with only a bank card.

This Thursday, Metro and Visa introduced a contactless solution, which allows passengers to pay for a trip directly at checkouts, without having to go to a ticket machine.

It is no longer necessary to insert the card at the stations or enter codes to pay for the trip. With the new technology, it is enough to bring the bank card to the validator and the payment is made automatically (the cost of a normal trip, € 1.65).

Other payment devices can be used, such as smartphones and smartwatches, which also allow checkers to pay for the trip using contactless technology.

This method allows users of the Lisbon Metro to travel faster, has more customer flow at the stations and does not require the purchase of trips in vending machines and chain stores.

“Through this new function, which is being implemented progressively, Metropolitano de Lisboa contributes to the improvement of mobility in the Lisbon metropolitan area, decarbonization and environmental sustainability, as when fully electronic payment it is also possible to significantly reduce the use of paper. Metropolitano de Lisboa is The only operator in the city where this new technology is implemented throughout the network and now positions itself as one of the most advanced operators at the global level in terms of the public service provided”, notes Vitor Domingues dos Santos, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Metropolitano de Lisbon.

“Electronic payments make public transport more efficient and attractive, but also contribute to making the city more environmentally friendly,” highlights Goncalo Santos López, Regional Director at Visa Portugal.

The project cooperates with INDRA, Cybersource, Littlepay and Unicre.

It must be remembered that this technology has already been implemented in Metro do Porto since 2020, allowing you to trade using a bank card in public transport Invicta that Andante is committed to.

With the new procedure, Lisbon enters the list of more than 100 European cities that already provide the digital payment method directly in public transport.
