ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023) review

ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023) review

As has become the norm, every year, the Asus He was present at CES 2023 where they took advantage of the event to reveal some of their creations for this year 2023. One of these novelties is ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023)a gaming laptop we’ve had a chance to use for a few weeks, and now it’s time to pass our verdict.

Unlike many other manufacturers, Asus takes care of the pleasant sensations when unpacking a case laptop. These details are not always taken care of, but the company here makes sure that the whole experience is perfect, and right from the start they unpack it, as their boxes are worth keeping for many years.

However, what really matters is the ROG Strix SCAR 16 itself. The entire device is full of details that give it a truly unique and cool look. Among the materials used for its finish we have metal and plastic, the quality of which I have no complaints about. However, any surface laptop It is easily covered with traces of hands, which can be easily removed with any cloth. But to get a nice look laptopthis cloth should always be kept nearby.

In terms of this device’s connectivity, again, nothing to complain about. The ROG Strix SCAR 16 has the usual power jack, a 2.5Gb RJ45 port, HDMI 2.1, USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, Thunderbolt 4, and a headphone combo jack on the left, and two USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports on the right. There are two things here that can affect usability, but not in all cases.

First, I feel more comfortable with some of the ports (power, HDMI, Ethernet, etc., especially with cables that are generally thick and thick) behind the top box, which is what ROG has done before. Secondly, there are only two USB-A ports, and both are located on the right where they can be connected to a mouse while gaming or working. Although Hubs solve the problem of who needs USB-A ports, the truth is that this port is still heavily used, and two are really few.

Regarding its 16-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels, we have a lot to say, and again well, we start with the ratio of 16:10. The 16-inch screen is indeed a screen that definitely benefits the gamers experience. I usually work on a laptop with a 15-inch screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and switching to this screen didn’t take any kind of getting used to, and it’s fun to work that way. until the Tires Around the screen neatly arranged.

In fact, this is a fast matrix, the refresh rate of which reaches 240 Hz, and the response speed is 3 ms. The system allows you to disable the acceleration and refresh rate to save energy, but personally I have never had such a desire, since it has a noticeable effect on the comfort of work, especially when working with a large amount of content, and above all in games.

But this is not the most interesting thing either, since this screen has a small LED backlight that gives it a nice effect, for example, in HDR content. Overall, this is an excellent offering, and once you understand its features well, you can find the right set of settings for your preferences and different situations.

Another point I really liked about the ROG Strix SCAR 16 was its keyboard. This has the island type full size version, just without the numeric keypad. Separately, there are dedicated keys for controlling the sound, playback mode and calling the ARMORY CRATE application, the functions of which can be changed … if necessary. But one thing you have to get used to, the media playback control keys, which are on the right edge of the keyboard. Those users who work without looking at the keyboard can sometimes press, for example, Play instead of Backspace (yes, I admit, it happened to me many times, more than I wanted to).

Other than that, it’s one of the best keyboards I’ve ever worked with. Keystrokes of 2 mm, clear mechanisms with quick actuation, pleasant and not loud sound – all this allows you to work and play comfortably. And of course we have the right to RGB lighting with a bunch of different modes and the possibility of synchronization and personal customization.

The situation with sound is also not bad in the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023). The laptop has four speakers, two of which are located below the screen and two more are in a standard position on the bottom panel, which is closest to the user. This makes the sound louder. Unfortunately, these are still not the best possible speakers, but at the same time, they are among the best that can be found in this type of device. Of course, ardent music lovers will not like to listen to music. But for watching movies or videos, listening to new releases on Spotify or playing games without headphones, it will be more than enough. Yes, the quality could really be better, but compared to most gaming laptops, the speakers are really good.

ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023) has several hardware configurations, and the version we tested was really the best. what is the best? Simple, Intel Core i9-13980HX, Nvidia RTX4080, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD storage (in Raid 0).

from scientifict side? Everything, but everything runs very well, fast and smooth. To test this laptop, I played PUBG, where I was able to get a solid 150fps for a very long time. Another game I tested was the notoriously old GTA V, it managed 133fps, which is really stable. It is stable because the machine has a 7-tube cooling system, three fans, a vapor chamber, and liquid metal. All this accompanied by several hot air outlets, and everything seems to work really well.

And not to worry, as in “office” mode the ROG Strix SCAR 16 barely performs. A full day at work, and the only sound you make is typing with your fingers. If we start playing, the situation changes a bit…but something good happens.

It lacks to speak of its autonomy, and like the vast majority of the latest laptops, this one is much better at handling power consumption. In a daily office routine with power saving mode and comfortable backlight settings, the ROG Strix SCAR 16 lost 15-20% battery per hour, and watching a two-hour movie could cost the batteries a lifetime. one-third of its capacity. But I also have to know that file laptops For games you still don’t buy thinking they have long lasting batteries. Here the 90Wh battery isn’t bad, but it’s not enough for a full day of work (8 hours) away from the charger.

Final verdict ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023)

It may not look like it, but the ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023) is probably the best laptop For the games I had a chance to test. It’s all full of strengths, starting with its looks, build quality, nice fast display with a small LED backlight, good keyboard, good sound and super bass performance with extraordinary stability.

To be honest with you, I don’t have any major negative points to point out, except for the lack of a fingerprint sensor, which is increasingly useful in everyday life … but it’s such a precious thing that it doesn’t even deserve a mention in it.

As such, our note on this ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2023) couldn’t be anything more:
