Toyota will release a hydrogen version of the Hilux in 2023

Toyota is diversifying its commitment to hydrogen and is now preparing to apply it to a prototype Hilux with a hydrogen fuel cell.

Toyota is one of the brands that has invested the most in developing alternative energy sources for its cars.

In addition to focusing heavily on developing HEV, PHEV and BEV solutions, it has now also begun to focus on fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV).

The focus on hydrogen began with the Mirai and has spread to some competing models such as the Toyota Corolla of the Super Taikyu series in Japan or the GR Yaris that recently raced in Europe.

Now, the brand intends to take the bet on hydrogen to other segments and it is Bring This technology arrives in your Hilux.

The project is funded by the UK’s Advanced Payments Center (APC) and will be supported by British firms Ricardo, ETL, D2H and Thatcham Research.

Initially, several prototypes will be developed to assess the applicability of hydrogen to this type of work vehicle, and it will be decided later if this is a concept to bet on.

Prototypes of the Toyota Hilux will go into production this year, and should feature the fuel cell used in the latest Mirai. The first units will leave the Toyota factory in Bernaston, UK.
