Emirates isn’t too excited about the 787 Dreamliner, even shortly after it ordered the plane from Boeing.
In 2017, Arabian Airlines ordered a total of 40 units of Boeing’s 787-10 Dreamliner, with the option to reverse some of those orders in the smaller model, the 787-9, which has greater range. A few years later, with delays in receiving both the Dreamliner and the 777X, Emirates said today it doesn’t see much benefit in the smaller Boeing jet.
The Boeing 787 was highly anticipated by the market, with Emirates being one of the few major airlines yet to choose between the Dreamliner and the A350XWB, while it was clear that it needed a smaller aircraft to complement its future fleet. 777Xs and the current giant A380.
In a statement to journalist Andreas Spaath during the IATA AGM 2022 meeting, Emirates CEO Tim Clark used a critical tone to say that the aircraft would no longer be necessary. He said: “Not receiving a Boeing 787 would be beneficial for both sides, for us the 777-9X is more important”
Although the news seems very strange, no official action has been taken yet. This may be just another threat from Emirates to put pressure on Boeing, but only upcoming developments will be able to confirm what Emirates really means.
