What is a full moon?
Apart from the Sun, the Moon is the clearest celestial body visible from Earth. It orbits the Earth at a distance of about 384,000 kilometers, sometimes slightly closer to the blue planet, and sometimes it is farther away. This is due to the elliptical shape of the orbit, which is generally the law for celestial bodies in the gravitational field. On the other hand, perfect circular orbits are rare. All orbital shapes are based on the so-called protection of angular momentum, the preserved magnitude of physics.
The optimal shape of the Earth’s orbital ellipse is more or less affected by confusing effects. At 3,476 kilometers in diameter, the Moon is the fifth largest of the 205 moons in our solar system. Jupiter and Saturn’s moons are only three of Titan’s four largest moons. Earth’s satellite is significantly less massive than our blue planet and exerts only one – sixth of Earth’s gravitational pull. Soviet lunar explorer Lunik III radioed the first images of the back in 1959, but at Christmas 1968 when the Apollo 8 crew orbited the Earth’s orbit, people saw with their own eyes the side that was moving away from Earth.
The moon can sometimes be seen as a crescent, sometimes half, and sometimes a luminous, complete disk. “The moon is called the full moon when its side facing the earth is facing the sun, so it shines fully,” said Dr. Manfred Gaida, astronomer and research partner at the German Space Center (DLR) in Bonn-Oberkassel. “Most of the time, the Moon is just above or below the plane of the Earth orbiting the Sun.” The full moon is only possible at night because the moon and sun must be on opposite sides of the earth. Thus, the full moon rises on the horizon as the sun sets on the other side.
How many times does a full moon occur?
The so-called phases of the moon have determined the lives of people for centuries. For example, they formed the basis for agricultural activities and the division of the year into months.
