The prospect of hosting the Brisbane Olympics in 2032 will make Australia the second country to host the Games in three different cities, after the IOC executive recommended his candidacy.
If the Brisbane project goes ahead, the city will join Melbourne, the 1956 Olympic site, and Sydney in 2000.
Brisbane was the candidate for the 1992 Games, which Barcelona won, while Melbourne again sought to organize the 1988 Games (they were for Seoul) and the 1996 Games (Atlanta).
So far, the United States has hosted the Games in only three different cities: St. Louis in 1904, Los Angeles in 1932 and 1984 – again in 2028 – and Atlanta in 1996.
Although there are other countries that have hosted the Games three times, they have always done so in the same city. This is the situation in France, with Paris in 1900, 1924, and one already issued in 2024, and the United Kingdom, always in London in 1908, 1948 and 2012.
Greece has twice hosted the Olympics in Athens (1896 and 2004), with Japan finally hosting the Games in Tokyo next July, already the 1964 Olympic city.
IOC launches a new selection process with 2032 Games, which, after examining the plans of interested cities, determines what capabilities it has and suggests which things can progress. In this case it is only Brisbane, which in practice will become the safest headquarters.
“This is not a decision against anyone, but in favor of one party interested at the moment,” said Thomas Bach, Germany ‘s IOC chief, referring to the “uncertainty” of the world situation.
Already with the 2024 and 2028 Games, the IOC took an unprecedented decision by splitting the seats between the two interested cities, Paris and Los Angeles. (D)
