Erdogan sacked Turkey’s Statistical Chief

Deposed bureau chief Sait Erdal Dinser ended up in bad weather after the statistics agency provided data earlier this month that showed Turkey’s annual inflation in 2021 was 36.1 percent, the highest level in 19 years.

The inflation rate has revealed the depth of the currency crisis developed by the president’s unconventional interest rate policy, the news agency writes. Reuters.

The country’s opposition has criticized the agency for presenting what it believes has not been adequately reported. The opposition believes that the real increase in the cost of living was at least twice the rise.

For his part, Erdogan criticized the agency for publishing data that he believes exaggerate the extent of the damage to the Turkish economy.

Erdogan appointed Erhan Cetinkaya, the former deputy head of the country’s credit watchdog, but did not give any reasons for his appointment.

The President also appointed a new Minister of Justice. Former Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag replaces party veteran Abdulhamit Gul.

– I have resigned from my duties as Minister of Justice, a role I have held since July 19, 2017, Gul wrote on Twitter.

– I would like to express my gratitude for the approval of my request, he writes, without giving further explanations.
