Medals, certificates and awards symbolize recognition of years of dedication to study by three students from Ciara who belong to the same family. Twins Rachel Pinheiro Esmeraldo and Ronaldo Pinheiro Esmeraldo, 12, and older sister Judith Pinheiro Esmeraldo, 15, have achieved outstanding results in the National Science Olympiad (ONC), which is part of the school’s science program. The award ceremony was held on the 7th of last month, in Brasilia, and was attended by the astronaut and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Marcos Pontes.
The Olympic Games include the joining of five related scientific societies: the Brazilian Society of Physics (SBF), the Brazilian Chemistry Society (ABQ), the Butantan Institute, the Brazilian Astronomical Society and the University of Campinas State (UNICamp).
The twins won ONC gold together, and Rachel received the highest score among the nearly three million students who attended the event, for which she won an award. Says Rachel, who also highlighted her future desire to return to the federal government as capital.

Ronaldo also did not hide his happiness to be next to the only Brazilian astronaut to go into space, who is currently MCTI Minister. “I was moved by the opportunity to meet the Minister and Astronaut Marcos Pontes. I was very happy with my performance at ONC, but I did not imagine that I would go to Brasilia to speak with the Minister,” he said.
According to the young man’s mother, Patricia Pinheiro, the path of older sister Judith, who won a silver medal at ONC, served as an inspiration to the youngsters. “I think they started to see Judith excited to be in the Olympics, and they won the medals and also wanted, that was the way, the good example of an older sister” highlights Petrúcia when mentioning her daughter’s other accomplishments, like gold in the Olympics — chemistry, physics, robotics, astronomy.
Proud of the remarkable results her children have achieved, Patricia, who is a physician, as well as her husband, says that education has always been appreciated in the family environment. The mother explains that she does not want her children to view their studies as a burden.
“It would be horrible if the kids didn’t want to study. But I didn’t want them to see it as an obligation, I wanted it to be something they really wanted, for them to realize the importance, and to feel how wonderful it was to know new things.”

Even with such a large investment by the family, both in devoting time and in financial investment, Petrúcia shares the success of her accomplishments with a class that, for her, deserves to be commended: the teachers.
“Our teachers, from Ceará, need to be highly regarded, because in fact, Ceará students, if you look at it, are the majority in ITA endorsements. We already have this tradition of older boys, who achieve excellent places in the main selections of Brazil,” he adds, noting Good results reach younger and younger students.
Still at the party in Brasilia, Patricia reports that her children are grateful, as well as feeling a part of history. As a mother, she describes how happy she is to have an experience like this with her children.
“I feel very proud, the feeling that everything was right. We have always invested a lot in educating children. Rachel’s name is written on the Olympic trophy, because it was the highest grade in Brazil. This, as you can imagine, as a mother I had an extrasensory experience,” he describes.
Due to her prominence at ONC, in addition to the award, student Rachel Pinheiro Esmeraldo was invited to accompany the next launch at the Alcantara Space Center, a Brazilian missile launch base located in Maranhão. The young woman has also been invited to accompany the movement of a Brazilian Navy ship, and both invitations will be paid by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Trade.
Finally, Petrúcia revealed that she almost did not accept the invitation to go to Brasilia with her children, fearing the risk of exposure to the Corona virus, during the current pandemic scenario. However, she took all precautions, knowing that the experience was worth it. He concludes, “I’m glad I went because it was a unique experience for them. I think it will always be in their memory, it was building something for the rest of their lives.”
