The discovery was made this weekend, near the coastal city of Caesarea in northern Israel. About 150 meters offshore in five meters of water, the man found a number of artifacts, including several anchors and pottery. The sword was about a meter long and was covered in shells, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority.

It is believed to be around 900 years old and will now be investigated further.

The area served in antiquity as a safe haven for ships, and a number of archaeological finds have been found here. Some of the finds are 4,000 years old.

“This environment has attracted merchant ships throughout the ages, leaving behind abundant archaeological finds,” said Kobi Sharvit, head of the Maritime Affairs Department of the Israel Antiques Authority (IAA). for BBC.

The sword is covered with shells.

Charvet further explains that the sword is very heavy, because it is a huge sword made of iron, and also because shells and stones were associated with the ancient weapon.

– This means that whoever carried this sword and fought against it must have been very strong. I try to see him in front of me on the battlefield, with all the armor, as he fights with the sword, says the archaeologist.
