South on the Sea (VG) The assassination of Sir David Amis sends shock waves across the British Isles. Many want measures that would increase the security of elected representatives.
The Methodist Church where Friday will be held for a 25-year-old Conservative MP stabbed to death, in a residential area of Southend-on-Sea in Essex, East London.
Sir David Amis, 69, set up an open house for his constituents, as he did every Friday, when the man is said to have broken into and attacked.
When VG hits the street in Leigh late Friday night, there are a few dozen flowers on each side of the police barricade. A blue heart-shaped balloon is attached to one of the bouquets.
A young couple living indoors is allowed to bypass barriers. They don’t want to say anything. Otherwise, there are no locals at the scene, only TV newsrooms broadcasting live.
But the fact that the street is deserted on cold, clear autumn evenings is not because Sir David’s sudden death occurred unnoticed. Reaction to the killing was strong in the UK.

The crime was classified Friday night as a terrorist attack. Police are now looking for two addresses in the London area.
Sir David Amis was a prominent politician as the Conservatives in the House of Commons.

In a public statement, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson paid tribute to his fellow Conservatives.

Sir David Amis hails from a Catholic family and was raised in humble circumstances on the East Side of London, where he was born in 1952.
In political life, he distinguished himself by supporting Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, as an opponent of abortion, and for many years committed to the welfare of animals.
Sir David has been in Parliament for 38 years after being first elected in 1983.
He never had a ministerial role during his political career, but served as an advisor to former ministers such as Edwina Cory and Michael Portillo under Margaret Thatcher.
A local conservative advisor, David Garston, cites Sir David’s selfless political behavior as the hallmark of the politician.
– To find a Member of Parliament like Sir David, who didn’t think about cabinet positions – he wasn’t interested, he was a man of the local community – I would describe him as irreplaceable, says Garston in an interview with the Palestinian News Agency.
Sir David Amis was awarded a knighthood in 2015 for political and public service, an honor he celebrated by wearing armour.
Demanding security for parliamentarians

A memorial service was held
St Peter’s Church, located near the scene, called for a memorial service for Sir David Amis on Friday night.
Father Geoffrey Woolnow referred to Sir David Amis as Mr. Southend’ in the speech during the ceremony, He writes for the Jersey Evening Post.
As the pastor places a picture of Sir David on the altar, he says, “I didn’t expect this Mass to take place tonight.”
– He had a proud demeanor in fearless East London and was able to talk to people at the level they are. Not all politicians, I say, are good at it, said the Reverend.
Those who attended the mass were invited to light a candle and share their own memories of Sir David. The newspaper said that one candle was burned outside the church, according to the residents of the constituency.
Stoltenberg consoles
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg shares his condolences via Twitter in a post he shared from Boris Johnson.
– Shocking news from the UK. My thoughts and sympathies are with David Ames’ family and colleagues and the British people, Stoltenberg writes.
We are shocked and saddened by the death of Sir David Amis, who devoted forty years of his life to serving his community, Britain’s Prince William and Duchess Kate write on his Twitter account.
British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab describes Sir David as a “popular politician” and a formidable politician with a big heart.
He added that Sir David was “of a very generous spirit, including toward those with whom he disagrees”.

Carrie Johnson, wife of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, expressed her sympathy in a message on Twitter:
“Very depressing news about Sir David Amis. He was very kind and good. A great animal lover and a real gentleman. That is totally unfair. Thoughts with his wife and their children.”
Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon is silent after news of the assassination.
“This is cruel beyond words. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with David’s family, friends and colleagues. May God have mercy on him,” writes Sturgeon.
